A Guide to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The BUS is a government initiative to decarbonise homes and small non-domestic buildings in England and Wales. It tackles the issue of fossil fuel reliance in heating systems, which are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme offers upfront capital grants to incentivise property owners to replace their old boilers with low-carbon alternatives.

While the BUS encourages a move away from fossil fuels, it doesn't offer grants for all heating systems. Here's what you can get financial support for:

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)

These pumps extract heat from the outside air, even at low temperatures, and transfer it to your home's heating system. They're a highly efficient option and can significantly reduce your energy bills.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs)

These systems utilise the constant ground temperature to provide heating and hot water. While more expensive to install than ASHPs, they offer exceptional efficiency and lower running costs in the long term.

What grants are available?

As of July 2024, the BUS offers a generous grant of £7,500 to cover the cost and installation of both air source and ground source heat pumps.

With this grant, the upfront cost of a low-carbon heating system becomes considerably more manageable.

Am I Eligible for the Scheme?

To be eligible for the BUS grant, you'll need to meet a few criteria: your property must be in England or Wales, have a fossil fuel heating system and you must be the owner of the property. New build properties are generally not eligible unless they haven't been occupied yet and the developer is still involved.

Taking the Next Step

If you're interested in taking advantage of the BUS and making the switch to a low-carbon heating system, here's what to do next:

  • Check Eligibility: Use the government's online tool to confirm your eligibility for the scheme.
  • Research Options: Learn more about air source and ground source heat pumps, and consider if biomass is a suitable option for your situation.
  • Find an Installer: Locate qualified BUS installers in your area who can assess your property and recommend the best system for your needs.
  • Apply for the Grant: Once you've chosen an installer, they can help you with the grant application process.
